How to Check WiFi Signal Strength (Without an App)

By · · Updated · 1 min read

The WiFi icon on your phone or laptop is a rough guide at best. Three bars can mean a solid connection or a struggling one. Here is how to see the real signal strength on each type of device, and how to test signal quality in every room.

1. On Windows

Open Command Prompt and run netsh wlan show interfaces. The Signal line shows a percentage. Roughly, 80% and above is excellent, 60–80% is good, and below 50% is weak.

2. On a Mac

Hold the Option key and click the WiFi icon in the menu bar. The RSSI value is your signal in dBm. Closer to zero is better: -50 is excellent, -67 is the practical minimum for calls and streaming, and -80 or lower is weak.

3. On Android

Go to Settings > Network & internet > Internet, tap your network, and look for Signal strength. Some phones show only Excellent / Good / Fair / Weak.

4. On iPhone

iPhone does not show dBm in Settings. The bars are the only built-in indicator. That is where a browser-based test helps.

Test signal quality room by room

Signal strength numbers do not tell you whether a video call will freeze. Interference and congestion can make a strong signal perform badly. Our walk test measures what you actually experience: ping, jitter, packet loss and speed, live, as you move through your home. For a full floor map, use the WiFi heatmap.

What is a good WiFi signal strength?

Between -30 and -60 dBm is excellent to very good. Around -67 dBm is the minimum for reliable streaming and calls. Below -75 dBm expect problems.

Can I check WiFi signal strength on iPhone?

Not as a number in Settings. Use the bars as a rough guide, or run a browser walk test to measure real quality in each room.
