What Is a Good Ping, Jitter and Packet Loss?

Download speed gets the headlines, but latency decides whether games lag and calls freeze. Here are the numbers to aim for.

What each one means

Ping is the round-trip time to a server. Ping under load is the same while your connection is busy; a big jump is called bufferbloat. Jitter is how much ping varies. Packet loss is data that never arrives.

How weak WiFi affects them

Weak signal causes retransmissions, which show up first as jitter and packet loss, then as higher ping. That is why our walk test watches all three as you move.

Is 50 ms ping good?

Yes, for almost everything including most online games.

What causes high jitter on WiFi?

Weak signal, interference, crowded channels and other devices using the network heavily.
